rejse fra Guayaquil til Antwerpen med bananer.
Kollideret d. 12/10 55 i Det karibiske Hav.
Søforklaring i Antwerpen d. 4/11 55. Søforhør i København d. 25/11 55.
Kl. ca. 0500, da B. R. under en let NØ.-lig brise med regnbyger befandt sig i Det karibiske
Hav på kurs rv. 031°, pejledes et medgående skib i rv. 076°. Kl. ca. 0517 var pejlingen
rv. 081°, og afstanden til skibet antoges at være ca. 1/2 sm. Kort efter sås i omtrent samme
pejling toplysene og det røde sidelys fra et skib, der senere viste sig at være M/S „VENATOR"
af Stavanger. Da V. hurtigt nærmede sig, lagdes roret hårdt bb., og begge maskiner beordredes
stop og derpå fuld kraft bak. Fra V. hørtes 1 kort tone. Ca. 11/2 min. efter at V. var kommet
til syne, tørnede B. R. med stb.s side af stævnen mod V.s bb.s side under en vinkel på ca. 35°.
Ved kollisionen skete skade på B. R.s bov og stb. side.

Brazilian Reefer

Quite surprised to see posting of Brazilian Reefer re-classified to general
cargo, as apart from her name which gives some idea of the owners thinking,
all reports I have seen of her refer to her as a reefer. Would be interested
to know what has lead to this conclusion and I'm picking info taken from early
Lloyds Register which used the term "General Cargo - Ref", though I
think this is now replaced by "reefer" in modern registers. If you
have to follow this line then the "Snow" class reefer positings will
also need to be re-classified.
Soviet Merchant Ships and the WSS J.Lauritizen 1881 all refer to her as a
reefer. She was actually launched with a bottle of orange juice instead of
champagne, and spent well over a year at the beginninig of her career
shuttling bananas from Ecuador to North America. She later loaded meat cargoes
ex New Zealand and the Russians used her as a fish carrier.
Even if the ship had some general spaces, I believe her intended role was
worldwide refrigerated tramping. You can argue that some of the big British
refrigerated cargoliners should be called reefers as well as some had up to
80% of space fitted to carry refrigerated cargoes. But they were for specific
trades with a different kind of thinking. The reefer was the next stage of
development, for niche trades, not necessarily large and certainly fast and
with temperature settings from hard frozen to chilled. This I believe is the
market the Brazilian Reefer was built for.
